Why resin-bound for paths

A smooth, seamless path — start to finish

Resin-bound stone is naturally rounded aggregate trowelled on site through a clear, UV-stable resin to form one continuous surface. For pathways that means no slab joints to trip on, no pavers to lift and rock, and no loose gravel scattering into the garden — just a clean, flowing line from gate to door that holds its shape and its colour for years.

It's the kind of path you stop noticing for the right reasons: nothing catches a wheel, nothing migrates onto the lawn, and nothing needs raking back into place after every storm. Done properly, it simply works — quietly, season after season.

  • Smooth and firm underfoot — comfortable for prams, wheelchairs, walking frames and bare feet, with no loose stone to push through.
  • One continuous surface that flows around curves, beds and trees without joints, cuts or trip lines.
  • Permeable when laid over a permeable, open-graded base — water drains through to the ground rather than pooling, subject to your site & council.
  • Weed- and crack-resistant, with crisp, defined edges that hold their line season after season.

A good garden path should feel inevitable — not something you watch your step on.
The Terralume approach

That's the standard we set out to. A path that disappears underfoot in the best way: even, quiet and confident, with crisp edges that frame your planting instead of competing with it. We set out every line by hand for your garden — the curves, the falls, the way it meets steps, gates and beds — so the finished surface reads as part of the garden, not a strip laid across it.

Accessible by design

Smooth enough for prams, wheelchairs & mobility aids

Loose gravel grabs at pram and wheelchair wheels; pavers and concrete crack into lips and trip edges over time. A trowelled resin-bound surface is firm, even and joint-free — the kind of path you can push a pram or a wheelchair along without fighting the ground.

Firm & even

A bound surface with no loose stone to slow wheels or shift underfoot — a stable, predictable path for prams, wheelchairs and walking frames.

No joints to trip on

Seamless from edge to edge — no slab gaps, paver lips or expansion joints that catch a toe, a cane tip or a front wheel.

Slip-resistant texture

The fine, rounded aggregate gives grip without the loose-gravel slide — a comfortable, slip-resistant texture in wet or dry weather.

Tree-root friendly

Works with roots, not against them

Garden paths run past established trees, and tree roots move. A rigid concrete slab fights that movement until it cracks, lifts and trips. A resin-bound wear course is slightly flexible and, laid over a permeable base, lets water and air reach the soil around the roots.

Resin-bound path
  • Slightly flexible wear course that tolerates minor movement
  • Permeable build-up lets water & air reach the root zone
  • Resists cracking; no slab joints to lift into trip edges
  • Curves cleanly around trunks and beds
Plain concrete slab
  • Rigid — root pressure leads to cracking and lifting
  • Sheds water off the surface, away from the root zone
  • Cracks and joints become weed lines and trip lips
  • Hard to curve neatly; needs control & expansion joints

No surface is immune to significant ground movement. Large, vigorous roots can disturb any path over time — we set out edges, depth and the base build-up to give yours the best chance, and we'll be straight with you about what a site can and can't promise.

Permeable & WSUD-friendly

A path that lets the rain soak in

Permeability is a property of the whole build-up, not the resin alone. Laid over a clean, open-graded base, a resin-bound path lets rain drain through to the ground around your beds and trees — a Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) friendly approach under Victorian guidance.

  • Drains freely through to the ground when laid over a permeable, open-graded base, rather than sheeting water onto lawns and beds.
  • A WSUD-friendly, soft-landscaping-respectful build-up that keeps water in the garden — subject to your site and Greater Geelong City Council.
  • Where permeability isn't needed or the ground won't allow it, the same finish can be laid over a sound existing concrete or paved path.

We design the base to suit the site — drainage performance depends on the ground, the build-up and council approval. We never claim a path is "100% permeable", "drains instantly" or "never puddles".

The build-up

How a resin-bound path is built

From the stone you walk on down to the ground. The layers — and whether the path is permeable — are set out to suit your site, the loading and council requirements.

Honest specs

Pathway spec, in plain numbers

No overstatement. These are indicative working figures for a pedestrian path — every job is verified against the resin manufacturer's TDS/SDS and set out to suit your site.

Indicative resin-bound pathway specification
AggregateNaturally rounded, kiln-dried stone ~2–5 mm (max ~6 mm)
Coverage~25–30 kg/m², packed densely and bound flush
Depth (pedestrian)~15–18 mm wear course for foot-traffic paths
Resin dosage~7% by weight (typically 6.5–8%)
BinderTwo-part aliphatic polyurethane — UV/colour-stable (aromatic resins yellow and aren't used outdoors)
Suitable baseSound existing concrete or paved path, or a permeable open-graded build-up for free drainage
Guarantee5-year written workmanship guarantee, in plain language

All technical values are indicative and verified against the product TDS/SDS on every job. Where a path also takes occasional light vehicle access (e.g. a shared path-and-drive strip), we lift the depth to a vehicular spec — we'll advise after a site visit.

What to expect after we lay it

Cure timeline at around 20 °C. "Open to traffic" is not the same as "fully cured" — these are conservative buffers above the manufacturer's TDS minimums.

  • ~6–8 hours — open to foot traffic. You can walk the path, but it isn't fully cured yet.
  • ~24–72 hours — open to light vehicles, only where a path is rated for them.
  • ~7 days — full chemical cure, when the resin reaches its full hardness and strength.
  • Cold & winter installs take longer — all of the above lengthen in cooler weather, so we plan around the forecast.

Pathway FAQ

Common questions about resin-bound paths

Straight answers — including the bits other surfacers gloss over.

Is a resin-bound path really smooth enough for a pram or wheelchair?

Yes — that's one of its biggest strengths. Because the stone is bound flush in resin and trowelled into one continuous surface, there's no loose gravel to grab wheels and no slab joints to jolt over. It's firm, even and slip-resistant, which makes it comfortable for prams, wheelchairs, walking frames and bare feet. Where a path forms part of a formal accessibility route, we'll review the relevant requirements with you on site and set out gradients to suit.

Will it crack like concrete where tree roots push up?

It's far more forgiving than a rigid concrete slab. The resin-bound wear course is slightly flexible, so it tolerates minor ground movement that would crack and lift concrete into trip edges, and a permeable base lets water and air reach the root zone. We say "resists cracking", not "never cracks" — no surface is immune to significant root movement. We set out edges, depth and the base build-up to give your path the best chance, and we'll be honest about what a particular tree or site can promise.

Is the path permeable — will water just drain away?

Permeability is a property of the whole build-up, not the resin on its own. Laid over a clean, open-graded permeable base, a resin-bound path lets rain drain through to the ground — a WSUD-friendly approach that keeps water in the garden. Whether that's achievable depends on your ground, the base we build and Greater Geelong City Council requirements. We design the base to suit your site, and we never claim a path is "100% permeable", "drains instantly" or "never puddles". Where permeability isn't needed or the ground won't allow it, the same finish can be laid over a sound existing path.

Can you lay over my existing concrete or paved path?

Often, yes — if the existing path is sound, the resin-bound wear course can be bonded straight over it, with no demolition. That route isn't permeable (water runs off rather than through), so if free drainage matters we'd instead build a permeable open-graded base. Cracked, soft or moving slabs may need repair or a fresh build-up first. We'll tell you which path suits after a site visit.

How long until I can use the path?

At around 20 °C you can usually walk on it within about 6–8 hours, with full chemical cure at roughly 7 days. "Open to traffic" isn't the same as "fully cured", so we ask you to go gently in the first week. Everything takes longer in cold or winter weather, so we plan installs around the forecast and give you realistic timings up front.

How much maintenance does a resin-bound path need?

Very little. An occasional sweep and a gentle hose or low-pressure wash keeps it looking fresh; the bound surface is weed- and crack-resistant, so there's no raking gravel back into place and no joints sprouting weeds. We hand over a simple care guide so you know what to do — and what to avoid — to keep it at its best.

What does it cost, and how do I get a price?

Every path is different — length, width, the base build-up, edging, access and the blend all move the number — so we don't publish a misleading "from" price. We come out, measure up, talk through the options with real samples, and put it all in a fixed written quote backed by our 5-year workmanship guarantee. Are you properly set up to do this work in Victoria?

We're a new local business, and we'd rather earn your trust than overstate things. Domestic work in Victoria is covered by the Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995 (Vic) and overseen by the Victorian Building Authority and Consumer Affairs Victoria, with disputes handled through DBDRV/VCAT — and that's the framework we work within. Our quotes and 5-year written workmanship guarantee are in plain language so you know exactly where you stand. Company details, including our ABN, are confirmed in writing with your quote.
