Natural turf vs synthetic grass in Geelong

An honest comparison of natural turf and synthetic grass for Geelong yards — cost, upkeep, feel and longevity — and the base prep that decides the result.

Natural turf or synthetic grass for your Geelong backyard? An honest comparison — cost, maintenance, how each feels and lasts, and the one thing that matters more than the grass: the base.

The honest comparison

  • Up-front cost. Natural turf is cheaper to supply and lay. Quality synthetic costs more up front but saves on water, mowing and replacement over time.
  • Maintenance. Natural needs mowing, watering and feeding. Synthetic is low-maintenance — an occasional brush and hose — but not no-maintenance.
  • Feel & heat. Natural is cool and soft underfoot. Synthetic is green all year and shrugs off shade and heavy traffic, but warms up in full summer sun.
  • Where each wins. Natural for big, sunny, well-watered lawns you’ll enjoy maintaining; synthetic for shade, high-traffic strips, pet areas, or anyone who wants green with near-zero upkeep.

Whichever you choose, the base decides how it turns out. We prepare a properly graded, free-draining base — quality topsoil for natural turf, compacted aggregate with proper edging for synthetic — because a lawn laid on bad ground fails no matter how good the grass is.

Quick guide: which suits you?

  • Choose natural turf if you want a soft, cool, living lawn, you’ll water and mow, and the area gets decent sun.
  • Choose synthetic grass if you want green year-round with minimal upkeep, the spot is shady or high-traffic, or watering and mowing aren’t for you.
  • Still unsure? Tell us how you’ll actually use the space and your budget — we’ll give you a straight recommendation, not a sales pitch.

Is synthetic grass worth it over natural turf?

It depends on how you’ll use the space. Synthetic is green year-round with almost no upkeep, brilliant in shade or heavy-traffic spots, and never needs mowing or watering — but it costs more up front and warms up in full sun. Natural turf is cheaper to lay, cooler underfoot and feels alive, but needs water, mowing and a few weeks to establish. We’ll give you an honest read for your yard.

Why does the base matter so much?

For the same reason it matters under a driveway — what’s underneath decides the result. Turf laid on poorly prepared, compacted or badly drained ground stays patchy (natural) or goes lumpy and holds water (synthetic). We prepare a properly graded, free-draining base — a soil profile for natural turf, compacted aggregate for synthetic — so it lasts and drains.

Will it drain, or will I get a swamp after rain?

That’s a base-and-grading question, not a turf question. We set falls and, where needed, drainage into the base so water runs where it should instead of pooling. Free drainage also depends on your site, so we design the build-up to suit your block rather than promise it’ll never puddle.

How long until I can use a new natural lawn?

Newly laid natural turf needs to root in. As a guide, keep traffic light for the first couple of weeks and water it in well while it establishes — more in summer. Synthetic grass can be walked on straight away. We leave you with clear, realistic care notes for whichever you choose.
